2010 I-CARES Research Awards Announced: Three DBBS Faculty Among Awardees

The International Center for Advanced Renewable Energy and Sustainability (I-CARES) was founded in 2007 at Washington University in St. Louis to foster research on energy, environment and sustainability that cannot be done by single investigators alone.

I-CARES nurtures collaboration within WUSTL and with regional and international partners in order to speed progress in addressing the great challenges facing our world.

As part of its mission, I-CARES awards seed funding to university faculty undertaking innovative and collaborative research in the broad areas of bioenergy and sustainability through an annual call for proposals.

The 2010 I-CARES research grants in the amount of nearly $300,000 have been awarded to 11 faculty from four schools: Arts & Sciences, the School of Engineering & Applied Science, the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts and the School of Medicine.

Three WUSTL biologists earn national honors

DBBS Faculty Members Tuan-hua David Ho & Ralph Quatrano, along with DBBS graduate student Ashley Galant recognized by American Society of Plant Biologists

Three Washington University in St. Louis scientists were honored this year by the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB), two for sustained achievement in their careers, and the third for a promising beginning.

Tuan-hua David Ho, PhD, professor of biology in Arts & Sciences, was elected president of the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) for 2009-10. The ASPB, with 5,000 members, is one of the largest and most influential plant biology societies in the world.

Founded in 1924, its mission is to encourage and publish research in plant biology and to promote the interests of plant scientists. The ASPB publishes the highly cited and respected journals Plant Physiology and The Plant Cell.

Ralph S. Quatrano, PhD, the Spencer T. Olin Professor of Biology in Arts & Sciences and dean designate of the School of Engineering & Applied Science, won the Adolph E. Gude, Jr. Award, given every third year for outstanding service to the science of plant biology.

Ashley Galant, a graduate student in the lab of Joseph M. Jez, PhD, assistant professor of biology in Arts & Sciences, was awarded the Pioneer Hi-Bred graduate student fellowship. The fellowship recognizes innovative graduate research in areas of plant biology that relate to important commodity crops.....

Stuart Kornfeld receives prestigious Kober Medal


Stuart A. Kornfeld, MD, the David C. and Betty Farrell Professor of Medicine, has received one of the highest awards in academic medicine, the 2010 George M. Kober Medal, from the Association of American Physicians.

Kornfeld was presented the award on April 23 during the association's annual meeting in Chicago.

"The Kober Medal has always had a special meaning to me because of the extraordinary achievements of its previous recipients," Kornfeld says. "I am deeply honored to have been selected."...

Kharasch named vice chancellor for research


Evan D. Kharasch, MD, PhD, the Russell D. and Mary B. Shelden Professor of Anesthesiology and professor of biochemistry and molecular biophysics, has been appointed vice chancellor for research at Washington University in St. Louis, effective April 5. He had served as interim vice chancellor since July 2009.
Washington University Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton made the announcement.

“I want to thank Ed Macias and the search committee, chaired by Professor Deanna Barch, for their efforts," Wrighton says. “After several months of outstanding work in an interim role, we are pleased that Evan Kharasch has accepted this position permanently and know that he will serve and lead with distinction.”

Weber awarded $4 million to study cancer cell growth

Jason Weber, Ph.D., associate professor of medicine in the Division of Oncology, has received a $4 million Era of Hope Scholar Award to study potential new ways to control breast cancer cell growth.

Barbara Schaal named Mary-Dell Chilton Distinguished Professor

Barbara A. Schaal has been named the Mary-Dell Chilton Distinguished Professor in Arts & Sciences and will be installed on March 9, 2009.


"As one of our country's most outstanding biologists, Barbara Schaal is an excellent selection as the inaugural recipient of this distinguished professorship," said Chancellor Mark Wrighton. "Dr. Schaal has demonstrated impressive leadership skills both in her service to Washington University and the nation through her role with the National Academy of Sciences." Professor Schaal embodies excellence in research, teaching, leadership and service.


Schaal, an evolutionary plant biologist, counts over 150 publications and is well known for her work on the genetics of plant species, particularly the studies that use DNA sequences to understand evolutionary processes such as gene flow, geographical differentiation, and the domestication of crop species. Dr. Schaal’s research is primarily supported through highly competitive funding from the National Science Foundation. Her lab often collaborates with the Missouri Botanical Garden, one of the oldest botanical institutions in the United States. Her research uses a wide variety of techniques, from field observations to quantitative genetics and molecular biology. She studies plant species native to the U.S., tropical crops and their wild relatives, and Arabidopsis, the first plant to have its entire genome sequenced.


Professor Schaal brings additional distinction to Washington University in her current position as vice president of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, one of the world’s most prestigious science academies. Additionally, she plays a significant role in addressing scientific issues of concern to the U.S. government by chairing the Division on Earth and Life Studies of the National Research Council. "Many scientists I meet in this country and internationally know Barbara or know of her work. We are fortunate to have her on our faculty,” said Edward S. Macias, Ph.D., Provost and the Barbara and David Thomas Distinguished Professor in Arts & Sciences.


Born in Berlin, Germany in 1947, Professor Schaal became a U.S. citizen in 1956. She grew up in Chicago, graduated with honors from the University of Illinois-Chicago with a degree in biology, and received a doctorate from Yale University in 1974. She was on the faculty of the University of Houston and Ohio State University before joining Washington University in 1980. Here, she holds a joint appointment as both Professor of Biology in Arts & Sciences and Professor of Genetics at the School of Medicine. She has served as the chair of the biology department and is a longstanding member of the Arts & Sciences Academic Planning Committee. She was named the Spencer T. Olin Professor in Arts & Sciences in 2001.


Her career includes an extensive list of service, honors and awards. She has been president of the Botanical Society of America and president of the Society for the Study of Evolution. She has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Wilbur Cross Medal from Yale University, the Key award from the American Genetics Association, and a Distinguished Alumni award from the University of Illinois, among others. Professor Schaal is an elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Her recognition within the University includes the Founder’s Distinguished Faculty award, the Arthur Holly Compton Faculty Achievement award, and Graduate Student Mentor award.


Professor Schaal is dedicated to the teaching mission of Washington University. Outside of the classroom, she regularly involves undergraduates in her labs, serving as a mentor to many. She takes great pride in mentoring graduate students and post-docs, listing them prominently on her webpage under a "Hall of Fame" category. Students from her lab now hold post-doctoral fellowships and academic positions across this country and in Taiwan, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.


Mary-Dell Chilton is the Distinguished Science Fellow and Principal Scientist II at Syngenta Biotechnology, Inc. in Research Triangle Park, N.C. A key founder of modern plant biotechnology, she is the author of more than 100 scientific publications. Dr. Chilton was on the faculty of the biology department in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in the late 1970s and early 1980s. During that time, she led a collaborative research study that produced the first transgenic plants. This groundbreaking research was the basis for the many significant contributions plant biotechnology has made to agriculture today. Dr. Chilton received her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois and has been recognized with an honorary doctorate from the University of Louvaine, the John Scott Medal from the City of Philadelphia, membership in the National Academy of Sciences and the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Life Sciences from the Franklin Institute.

Two DBBS Faculty Named to Institute of Medicine
Two faculty members at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have been elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, one of the highest honors medical scientists in the United States can receive.

Jeffrey I. Gordon, M.D., and David M. Holtzman, M.D., were recognized for their major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care and public health and commitment to service.

Gordon is the Dr. Robert J. Glaser Distinguished University Professor and director of the Center for Genome Sciences, and Holtzman is the Andrew B. and Gretchen P. Jones Professor and chair of the Department of Neurology.

Gordon is internationally known for his research on gut development and how gut microbes affect normal intestinal function, and predisposition to health and to certain diseases. His research has shown that our gut microbes are biomarkers, mediators and potential therapeutic targets in the war against the worldwide obesity epidemic. By sequencing the genes present in gut microbial communities of obese and lean mice, and by observing the effects of transplanting these communities into germ-free mice, he has shown that microbial communities from obese mice have an increased capacity to harvest calories from the diet. His work in humans is focusing on lean, obese and malnourished twins in order to obtain a deeper understanding of how we acquire our gut microbes, the genomic and metabolic underpinnings of their beneficial relationships with us, and how they help shape the nutritional needs of humans living in various parts of the world.

Gordon earned a bachelor's degree from Oberlin College, a medical degree from the University of Chicago and completed post-doctoral research at the National Institutes of Health. He has been on the faculty since 1981 and has mentored about 100 doctoral and M.D./Ph.D. students and post-doctoral fellows. His many honors include election to the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. He has published 400 research papers and holds 23 U.S. patents.

Holtzman is known as one of the leading experts in researching the underlying mechanisms that lead to Alzheimer's disease in an effort to improve diagnosis and treatment. In addition to seeing patients at the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center and the Memory Diagnostic Center, Holtzman leads a research team working with animal models of Alzheimer's and works closely with the Washington University Alzheimer's Disease Research Center. His group has been instrumental in revealing mechanisms underlying how dangerous amounts of a protein called amyloid-beta (Abeta) begin to accumulate in the brain many years before symptoms arise. These basic science investigations have evolved over the years and are beginning to bridge the gap into the clinical arena.

Holtzman earned bachelors and medical degrees from Northwestern University. He completed an internship, residency and post-doctoral fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco, where he established the Memory and Cognitive Disorders Clinic and was assistant professor of neurology from 1991-1994, before joining the faculty at Washington University.
Past honors include the MetLife Foundation award for research on Alzheimer's Disease, a MERIT award from the National Institute on Aging and being selected as one of the Scientific American 50. He has published hundreds of papers in peer-reviewed journals, teaches medical students and supervises post-doctoral trainees.

Gordon and Holtzman are among 65 members whose elections to the Institute of Medicine were announced by the National Academy of Sciences Oct. 13. As members, Gordon and Holtzman make a commitment to devote a significant amount of volunteer time on committees engaged in a broad range of health-policy issues.
